Background: Prostate cancer is the most prevalent malignancy in elderly men in most parts of developing world. Notwithstanding, the existing epidemiological conclusion in our community is scanty. This study aimed to describe the age, frequency, morphological pattern and Gleason score of prostate cancers in Kano, Northwestern Nigeria. Materials and Methods: This was a 15-year retrospective review of the confirmed prostate cancers in Kano, Nigeria from 2001 to 2015. Results: Atotal of 514 cases of prostate cancers were diagnosed during the period, which equals 15.6% of the total confirmed male cancer cases in Kano. The age range was 36 to 95 years with a mean of 64.2 years (±SD 10.91). The majority was adenocarcinomas (97.9%); additionally, Gleason's scores of 5 and above predominated (78.2%). Conclusion: This study unveiled prostate cancer as common in Kano and most presentations were in the seventh decade. Higher tumour grades predominated; hence the need for focused prevention and control. |
